Why Is My AC Freezing Up?One Hour AC Technician Why Is My AC Freezing Up in Charlotte, NC?

There’s ice on your refrigerant line. Actual ice. In August, in Charlotte, on a copper line that should just be sweating.

Or maybe you caught it sideways the air went from cold to lukewarm over a few days and you finally walked out and looked.

Same thing either way. It’s freezing up, and that’s not a sign the system’s working hard.

Start With the Filter

Most of these calls end right at the filter rack. I stopped feeling bad a long time ago about charging a trip fee to say so.

The coil is cold. It’s supposed to be. What keeps it from going too cold is a steady stream of warm house air moving across it, and when you choke that off, the coil just keeps dropping. Once it drops below freezing, the condensation that ought to be running into the drain pan turns to frost instead. Then the frost turns into a white brick, and now you’ve got a system freezing up over a six-dollar filter.

Guy in Plaza Midwood had me out twice in one summer. Same one-inch filter both times, gray as a dryer screen.

If yours comes out clean, though, quit buying filters. That’s not your problem.

When the Filter’s Clean, Look at the Ducts

A lot of Charlotte’s older housing runs duct through the crawl space. The newer subdivisions put it up in the attic. Flex duct doesn’t love either spot. Somebody stacks storage bins on a run, or a boot works loose at the plenum, and the coil starves the same way it would behind a filthy filter. Freezing up again, different reason entirely.

Closed bedroom vents will do it. So will a couch shoved flat against the return.

Blower wheel’s the one nobody catches. Motor sounds fine, fan’s spinning, and the blades are packed with a quarter inch of gray felt. It’s moving half the air it should and you’d never hear the difference. Five minutes with a manometer finds it, and that ought to be standard on any AC repair where there’s ice involved.

Low Refrigerant Means There’s a Hole SomewhereAC Repair Technicians Charlotte NC

Refrigerant doesn’t get used up. It’s a closed loop if there’s less of it than there was, it went somewhere. A pinhole in the evaporator, a flare nut nobody torqued, a line set that’s been rubbing a floor joist under the house since 2016.

Less charge means less pressure, which means a coil running colder than anybody designed it to run. Ice, for a completely different reason than airflow.

The tell is usually the calendar. Cooled fine in May. Couldn’t hold 76 by the Fourth. Freezing up solid by mid-July.

Topping it off without hunting down the refrigerant leak buys you a season, maybe two. Then you’re right back here. Not that it’s a DIY job anyway you can’t legally buy the stuff without EPA certification.

What to Do Before Anybody Gets There

Cooling off at the thermostat. Fan switch to ON.

That second part is the one everybody skips, and it’s the difference between a two-hour thaw and one that eats your whole evening. You’re pushing warm house air across the ice instead of standing around waiting for it to give up on its own.

Throw some towels down first. All that ice is about to become water, and the drain pan’s already handling more than it wants to in Charlotte humidity.

Don’t chip at it. I watched a homeowner put a flathead straight through an evaporator coil once turned a diagnostic call into a coil order and four days without air.

And don’t do the thing where you flip it back on every hour for twenty minutes of cool air. It just starts freezing up again, thicker and faster than before.

Somebody Needs to Tell You Which One It Was

Melting the ice isn’t a repair. Dependaworthy AC technicians can tell you whether it was airflow or charge, and that’s the part that actually matters a compressor pulling in liquid instead of vapor dies quietly while you’re standing there waiting on the thaw.

FAQs About an AC Freezing Up in CharlotteThe Important Signs of Low Refrigerant in an AC Unit

Why’s it freezing up at night and not during the day?

Longer run times. Overnight the system cycles in longer stretches, so a borderline airflow or charge problem has more hours to stack ice on the coil. During the day it shuts off often enough that the coil gets a chance to recover.

Is it really hurting anything if I just let it run?

Yes. A frozen coil sends liquid refrigerant back toward the compressor, and compressors aren’t built to squeeze liquid. You might get away with a week of it. Plenty of folks don’t.

How long am I stuck waiting for it to thaw?

Two to four hours with the fan running. Longer if the cabinet’s packed solid I’ve seen eight. And every early restart puts the clock back to zero, so wait until you can’t find ice anywhere.

Do I need a permit for any of this?

Not for a repair. Mecklenburg County does require a mechanical permit to replace a heating or air conditioning system, regardless of what the job costs, and your contractor normally pulls it. If somebody asks you to pull it in your name, ask why.

Does freezing up mean I need a whole new unit?

Usually not. A dirty filter or a crushed duct is a repair and nothing more. A leaking evaporator on a fifteen-year-old R-22 system is a different conversation, and you deserve a straight answer on that before you spend a dime.

Shut it off, let it thaw, and don’t turn it back on until somebody’s told you why it iced over in the first place.
