How Can You Tell Where Your Ductwork Is Leaking?
That back bedroom has been running eight degrees warm since June. The AC cycles all afternoon and never quite catches up, the bill’s climbing, and whoever came out last said the equipment checks fine. Before anybody sells you a new system, look at the ducts. If the air’s dumping into the attic, a bigger unit just heats the attic faster.
The Rooms That Never Get Comfortable
Nobody finds a duct problem by looking. They find it by living in the house.
The back bedroom stays warm all July. The bonus room over the garage never really cools. You’ve bumped the thermostat two degrees at a time for a month and gotten nowhere.
Go hold your hand in front of each supply register while the system’s running. You’re not measuring anything you’re just comparing rooms. When the vents farthest from the air handler barely push while the ones right next to it are blowing hard, that’s usually the first hint your ductwork is leaking somewhere out along that run.
Doesn’t prove it, though. Half the time I get called for a hot bedroom, it’s a filter nobody’s changed since spring or a damper somebody closed in 2019 and forgot about. Same symptom at the register. So take it as a clue, not a verdict.
What You Can Check Yourself, Safely
Flashlight, and stick to what you can reach without getting hurt. Around Charlotte that usually means the crawl space or the attic.
Go after the joints. Boots, elbows, plenum seams, the takeoffs where a branch leaves the trunk line. That’s where things come apart flex duct pulled off its collar, mastic cracked and flaked away, old cloth tape hanging down in strips.
Dust streaked around a seam is a decent tell. Moving air carries dirt and leaves a mark, same as the sill of a drafty window.
One thing. Our attics hit 130 by mid-afternoon in August, and I’ve had a homeowner call me from the hallway floor after fifteen minutes up there. If the ductwork is leaking somewhere you can’t get to standing flat-footed, let it go and call somebody.

A high bill on its own doesn’t tell you much. Rate changes and a mean August do the same thing.
How We Actually Find the Hidden Leaks
Most of a duct system is somewhere you’ll never see it. Inside a chase, above drywall, buried under a foot of blown insulation. So we quit guessing and test.
A duct leakage test pressurizes the system with a calibrated fan and puts a number on how much your ductwork is leaking, in CFM. North Carolina’s energy code has required that test on new construction for years now, so if the house went up in the last couple decades there may already be a number sitting in the builder’s file. Test plus a walkthrough runs two to three hours.
Repairs come down to where the leak is. Anything I can get a brush on gets mastic and UL 181 foil tape not the cloth stuff from the hardware store, which quits in a hot attic inside two seasons. Can I find a duct leak myself?
The obvious ones, sure. Disconnected flex, torn insulation, mastic crumbling off in your hand, air you can feel at a seam all fair game in a crawl space you can move around in. The ones behind drywall need a pressure test.
Does sealing ducts really lower the bill?
Usually. The leakier it was to start, the bigger the savings after duct sealing. I won’t quote you a number before we’ve tested, though. If your ducts were already tight, sealing them isn’t going to rescue an undersized system.
Is duct tape fine for a quick patch?
For a week, maybe. Cloth-backed tape dries out and peels once attic heat gets to it, which is why every one I pull off is already hanging loose. Mastic or UL 181-rated foil tape is what actually holds.
Why is just one room bad and the rest fine?
Leaks on a long branch run do that, especially to the far bedroom. But duct sizing, a closed damper, and thin insulation in a room over the garage all produce that exact complaint. Diagnose before you seal.
Do I need a permit to get ducts sealed in Charlotte?
